US Bitcoin ETFs Surpass Satoshi Nakamoto’s BTC Holdings

In a historic achievement, the United States’ spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have now amassed more Bitcoin than the cryptocurrency’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Since the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2023, these funds have surpassed 1.1 million BTC for the first time. Bloomberg’s ETF expert, Eric Balchunas, shared the milestone on December 6 via X, citing market analyst Shaun Edmondson.

“The US spot ETFs have just passed Satoshi in total Bitcoin held, now holding over 1.1 million, more than anyone else in the world, and they’ve only been around for less than a year, still babies. Mind-blowing,” Balchunas remarked.

Data from HODL15Capital, a Bitcoin ETF tracking service, confirmed that the total Bitcoin held by US spot ETFs reached 1,103,965 BTC as of December 5.

How much Bitcoin does Satoshi hold?

Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, is credited with initiating the first Bitcoin transaction in January 2009. Beyond founding the cryptocurrency, Nakamoto is thought to be one of its largest holders, with estimates suggesting around 1.1 million BTC remain in wallets linked to him. This amount represents about 5.2% of Bitcoin’s total 21 million supply.

Recent reports by Balchunas highlight that US spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold 42% more BTC than Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange. Additionally, the ETFs hold 63% more Bitcoin than MicroStrategy, one of the leading corporate BTC holders.

Mike Novogratz says Nakamoto is no longer alive

While some in the crypto community continue to investigate the identity of Nakamoto, others believe the Bitcoin creator may no longer be alive. Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, a firm with its own spot Bitcoin ETF, expressed his conviction on CNBC on December 5 that Nakamoto is likely deceased.

“If Satoshi was alive — and I don’t think he is — I’m sure he’d have a big smile on his face,” Novogratz said, referencing Bitcoin’s surge past $100,000 on December 5.
