Japanese investment company Metaplanet has now overtaken El Salvador in total Bitcoin reserves after a substantial new acquisition.
On May 12, the Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed firm revealed it had purchased 1,241 BTC at an average price of 14.8 million yen (around $101,843 per Bitcoin), totaling approximately $129 million — its largest investment yet in terms of price per coin.
Following this buy, Metaplanet now owns 6,796 BTC, currently valued at roughly $707 million based on prevailing market prices. The company began its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024 and has been rapidly increasing its exposure to the asset.
Simon Gerovich, Metaplanet’s CEO, posted on X to celebrate the milestone: “We’ve gone from a modest start to holding more Bitcoin than a sovereign nation. This is only the beginning.”
El Salvador, once the top name among nation-states in Bitcoin adoption, now holds 6,714 BTC — valued around $642 million — according to figures from the country’s National Bitcoin Office.
Metaplanet also shared some performance data: its Bitcoin Yield — which tracks the percentage growth of BTC holdings relative to fully diluted shares — stands at 38% for the current quarter. In Q1 2025, it reported an even higher yield of 95.6%.
The company’s recent buying spree has been aggressive. Just days earlier on May 7, Metaplanet added 5,555 BTC. April saw four separate buys totaling 18,586 BTC, and March included six purchases adding up to 18,925 BTC — each round larger than the last.
Saylor Teases Another Strategy Buy
Elsewhere in the corporate Bitcoin space, Michael Saylor may be preparing another purchase for his company, Strategy. On May 12, he posted a cryptic “Connect the dots” message alongside a chart from the “Saylor Tracker,” a tool monitoring his firm’s BTC holdings.
This pattern of subtle hints followed by official announcements has become familiar for Saylor. As of now, Strategy reportedly holds 555,450 BTC, valued at approximately $57.8 billion.
