FIFA has officially selected Avalanche as the foundation for its newly launched blockchain platform dedicated to NFTs and digital experiences for fans, according to a May 22 announcement.
The new blockchain will be built using Avalanche’s layer-1 network, known for its high-performance infrastructure and ability to scale, supporting FIFA’s mission to connect with its global audience of over five billion fans.
This development follows FIFA’s recent announcement about its intent to create a specialized blockchain for its digital collectibles. Thanks to AvaCloud’s compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the platform will easily integrate with various decentralized apps and crypto wallets.
Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex and FIFA Collect, noted that the decision to go with Avalanche was based on a thorough evaluation of factors such as performance, cost-efficiency, scalability, and security. “This will allow us to deliver truly unique collectible experiences and interactive fan features,” Abbate said in the official statement.
FIFA Collect Begins Transition to Avalanche
With the launch underway, FIFA’s NFT platform, FIFA Collect, is migrating to the new Avalanche-based blockchain. The organization confirmed that additional updates and business use cases are in the pipeline, though they haven’t been disclosed yet.
As part of the shift, support for wallets built on Algorand—such as Pera and Defly—will be discontinued. Going forward, users will be able to access FIFA Collect using MetaMask and other EVM-compatible wallets via WalletConnect.
FIFA first introduced its NFT lineup in partnership with Modex ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
In a separate move, FIFA teamed up with Mythical Games in November 2024 to launch “FIFA Rivals,” a free-to-play football game available on iOS and Android platforms.
