Strategy Holds Off on New Bitcoin Buys as Price Dips Below $87K

Michael Saylor’s company, Strategy, known as the top publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin, chose not to expand its BTC stash last week despite the cryptocurrency slipping below the $87,000 mark.

According to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 7, Strategy made no Bitcoin acquisitions between March 31 and April 6.

This decision came during a particularly volatile week in the crypto market. Bitcoin briefly touched $87,000 on April 2, up from around $82,000 at the week’s start, based on CoinGecko data. However, by April 6, BTC had dropped back under $80,000—well below the average price of Strategy’s most recent buy of 22,000 BTC on March 31.

Additionally, Strategy reported that it did not sell any of its class A common stock during the same period, a typical method it uses to fund Bitcoin purchases.

As of April 7, the company held 528,185 BTC, acquired at a combined cost of $35.6 billion—translating to an average purchase price of $67,458 per Bitcoin.

The firm also disclosed an unrealized loss of $5.91 billion on its digital asset holdings for Q1 2025. However, it noted that a related income tax benefit of approximately $1.69 billion is expected to help cushion the impact.

Meanwhile, though the firm stayed on the sidelines, co-founder and ex-CEO Michael Saylor remained vocal on social media, continuing to champion Bitcoin’s role in the global financial landscape.

“Bitcoin is most volatile because it is most useful,” Saylor posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 3, following a sharp price swing triggered by tariff-related headlines involving former U.S. President Donald Trump.

In another post, he warned, “Inflation is just the tip of the iceberg,” and emphasized Bitcoin’s ability to withstand systemic threats, adding, “Capital is constantly under pressure—from taxes, regulations, and unexpected shocks. Bitcoin is the lifeboat in turbulent seas.”
