Polish Presidential Candidate Proposes Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Plan

Polish presidential hopeful Sławomir Mentzen has pledged to establish a Bitcoin reserve if elected in next year’s presidential race. His statement echoes a similar commitment made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump during his campaign.

On Nov. 17, Mentzen shared his views on X, reiterating his ambition to make Poland more crypto-friendly. When questioned about adopting a Bitcoin reserve, Mentzen firmly confirmed his support for the initiative.

This conversation stemmed from a prior post by Lech Wilczynski, CEO of crypto exchange Swap.ly. Wilczynski highlighted the open-source “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve” policy created by the Satoshi Action Fund, urging Mentzen to adopt it if elected.

Qries

“The draft bill on the strategic Bitcoin reserve is ready and waiting. Instead of passing ineffective regulations on crypto assets, this should be prioritized before it’s too late,” Wilczynski wrote.

He then posed the question: “Would President Sławomir Mentzen establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve for Poland?”

Mentzen’s response was unambiguous: “Of course.”

Poland’s next presidential election is set for May 2025. Mentzen, a prominent figure among libertarian and conservative voters, has seen his popularity rise as he continues to champion innovative policies, including pro-crypto initiatives.

Following Other Bitcoin Presidents

Mentzen’s pledge aligns with a growing trend among global leaders exploring Bitcoin reserves. During his campaign, Donald Trump outlined plans to create a “Strategic Bitcoin Stockpile.”

In the U.S., Senator Cynthia Lummis proposed legislation in July to establish a national Bitcoin reserve. If enacted, the law would aim to acquire one million Bitcoin over five years, with the intent to hold these assets for at least two decades as a hedge against mounting national debt.

Two nations, in particular, have already made significant strides in this direction.

El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. Under President Nayib Bukele’s leadership, the nation has accumulated a reserve of 5,748.8 BTC, further cementing its position as a global Bitcoin pioneer.

Meanwhile, Bhutan has quietly pursued Bitcoin mining for years. In September, Arkham Intelligence revealed that the Kingdom holds approximately $780 million in digital assets, signaling its substantial commitment to the cryptocurrency space.

With Mentzen’s commitment to a strategic Bitcoin reserve, Poland could join the ranks of nations leveraging Bitcoin as a strategic financial asset.
