Elon Musk has officially introduced Grokipedia, his long-rumored alternative to Wikipedia, aiming to create what he calls an AI-powered “truth engine.” The launch took place on Monday after a short delay, during which Musk said he wanted to “remove the propaganda” before going live.
In a series of X posts following the debut, Musk described Grokipedia as “fully open-source and free for everyone to use”, emphasizing its mission to deliver “truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
“We’ll never be perfect,” Musk said, “but we’ll always strive toward that goal.”
Early users have already pointed out notable contrasts between Grokipedia and Wikipedia. One example came from an article about George Floyd, where Grokipedia’s entry focused on Floyd’s criminal background, while Wikipedia highlighted that he was killed by a white police officer.
The platform briefly went offline shortly after launch due to high traffic but was quickly restored. According to Musk, Grokipedia now hosts more than 885,000 articles and operates with an entirely different structure compared to Wikipedia.
Instead of relying on volunteer editors, Grokipedia’s content moderation is powered by Grok AI, Musk’s in-house artificial intelligence system integrated into X. Users can suggest edits or request new entries, but the final word belongs to the AI.
Musk explained the process on X:
“Grok generated about a million articles using significant compute power. You can ask Grok to add, modify, or delete articles — it’ll either do so or explain why not.”
Musk has long accused Wikipedia of political bias, claiming its editorial base leans toward left-wing ideology. Interestingly, Grokipedia’s article about Wikipedia makes a similar point, referencing studies that claim the platform’s coverage of right-leaning topics tends to be more negative than left-leaning ones.
However, Wikipedia’s own article on Grokipedia presents the opposite concern — alleging that Musk’s new encyclopedia could favor far-right viewpoints or sanitize Musk’s public image.
According to Wikipedia’s entry:
“Critics have highlighted entries that promote far-right perspectives or align closely with Musk’s own views. NBC News noted that Grokipedia’s article about Musk omits mention of a hand gesture made in January 2025, which some interpreted as a Nazi salute — a detail included on Wikipedia.”
Grokipedia’s launch marks another step in Musk’s expanding AI ecosystem around X, where AI now plays an active role not just in conversations but also in defining what counts as “truth” on the internet.
