Former UFC superstar Conor McGregor has thrown his support behind the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve in Ireland, framing it as a way to shift financial control back into the hands of citizens.
“Crypto was born to empower individuals,” McGregor posted on X (formerly Twitter) on May 9. “An Irish Bitcoin reserve will help return financial strength to the people.”
McGregor, who recently launched an independent bid for the Irish presidency, revealed that more details would be shared during an upcoming X Spaces discussion. His announcement drew immediate attention from major voices in the crypto world.
Responding to Anthony Pompliano, host of The Pomp Podcast, McGregor wrote, “We need the brightest minds for this Bitcoin reserve. Message me and let’s talk live on my space.”
David Bailey, a key crypto advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, also engaged with McGregor, who replied, “David, message me — I want to hear your ideas.”
McGregor announced his candidacy in late March 2025, focusing on tough-on-crime stances and limiting immigration. Ireland’s next presidential election is scheduled no later than November 11, 2025, marking the end of current President Michael D. Higgins’ term.
Launching a Bitcoin reserve — particularly by an outsider candidate — is an ambitious goal. Only a few nations like the U.S., El Salvador, and Bhutan have made strides in developing such state-backed crypto holdings.
The Irish fighter’s political campaign recently gained momentum after a high-profile visit to the White House, where he met with Donald Trump and reportedly received his endorsement.
Still, McGregor’s public image is under fire at home. He’s currently appealing a civil court ruling that found him liable for sexual assault. He has also previously been investigated for hate speech-related offenses.
This isn’t McGregor’s first venture into crypto. His last project, REAL, launched under the Real World Gaming brand, failed to hit its funding target during a token pre-sale in April. The campaign raised only $392,315 — less than half of its $1 million minimum — leading to full refunds for contributors.
