Brazilian Supreme Court Halts Social Media Platform X (Twitter)

A Justice of the Brazilian Supreme Court has mandated the suspension of the social media service X within Brazil following Elon Musk’s refusal to designate a legal representative for the company.

A recent report from the Associated Press on August 30 noted that Justice Alexandre de Moraes moved to halt the operations of X in Brazil after Musk did not fulfill the requirement to assign a legal representative by the deadline of August 29. Representatives from X’s Global Government Affairs team stated that the platform “will not adhere to [Moraes’] unconstitutional demands to silence his political adversaries.”

The future actions of X in Brazil remain uncertain. Musk has repeatedly criticized Justice Moraes on social media, labeling him as “malevolent” and a “tyrant” due to what he perceives as “unlawful political censorship.” Moraes has been probing X for its role in disseminating and endorsing false information about the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro.

As of this report, users of X in Brazil have indicated they are still able to use the platform. Statistics from Statista show that out of approximately 217 million people in Brazil, over 20 million are users of X.

This development came shortly after reports on August 29 that Justice Moraes had directed the freezing of financial assets in Brazil belonging to the satellite company Starlink. SpaceX, another enterprise under Musk’s ownership, is the parent company of Starlink.
