Jack Dorsey’s company, Block, Inc., has announced plans to introduce Bitcoin payments to its Square platform, aiming to begin the rollout later this year and complete it by 2026.
The announcement was made during the Bitcoin 2025 event in Las Vegas on May 27, where the new payment feature was showcased live at the BTC Inc. merchandise store.
Square merchants will be able to receive Bitcoin payments using the Lightning Network, which enables fast, low-cost transactions on top of Bitcoin’s base layer. The system will work seamlessly with existing Square hardware.
According to a post by Dorsey on X (formerly Twitter), sellers will have the flexibility to either keep the Bitcoin or convert it instantly into fiat currency.
Block expects to start introducing the feature in the second half of 2025, with the goal of making it available to all eligible Square users by the following year, pending regulatory approval.
This initiative builds upon Square’s current Bitcoin Conversions tool, which allows merchants to automatically convert proceeds into BTC. For customers, paying in Bitcoin will be as simple as scanning a QR code, with Square and the Lightning Network managing the backend to ensure instant settlement.
“This is about giving merchants more freedom in how they accept payments,” said Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block.
In addition, Block is enhancing its Bitkey self-custody wallet—launched in late 2023—with new privacy and security features starting in May, aiming to make self-custody easier without relying on traditional seed phrases.
Stake n’ Shake Sees Major Fee Savings with Bitcoin
Also at the event, Dan Edwards, COO of U.S. fast-food chain Stake n’ Shake, shared how Bitcoin has significantly reduced their transaction costs.
“Using Bitcoin has been faster than credit cards, and we’re saving roughly 50% on processing fees when customers choose BTC,” Edwards said. “It’s a win for everyone—the customer, the merchant, and the Bitcoin community.”
On May 9, Stake n’ Shake revealed it would begin accepting Bitcoin at all its global locations starting May 16.
