Bitcoin Mined in 2009 Moves Again as ‘Ancient’ Whale Makes New Transfer: Arkham

A notable Bitcoin whale, known for mining BTC during the cryptocurrency’s earliest days, has recently moved a significant amount of Bitcoin to the Kraken exchange, according to a report from blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

In a post on X on October 4, Arkham highlighted that this particular Bitcoin was mined just one month after the official launch of Bitcoin in February/March 2009.

On October 3, this enigmatic whale transferred 10 BTC, valued at approximately $610,000. Since September 24, the total amount moved to Kraken has reached $3.58 million. Prior to these transactions, the associated wallet address had remained inactive for nearly a decade, Arkham noted in a previous post:

“Between 2011 and 2014, the Bitcoin was transferred several times, but it remained untouched for almost ten years, during which its value skyrocketed from $474,000 to over $80 million.”

Currently, the wallet address “3JZsd…QerUW” holds 1,169 BTC, equating to around $72.4 million at the current market rate, as reported by Arkham.

This activity has reignited discussions regarding the elusive identity of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

On October 8, HBO will premiere the documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” which claims to unveil the true identity of Nakamoto.

The leading candidate for this title appears to be the late American computer scientist Len Sassaman. Sassaman, a prominent figure in the cypherpunk movement, tragically passed away on July 3, 2011, just two months after Nakamoto indicated that they had “moved on to other things.” A tribute to Sassaman was embedded in Block 138,725 of the Bitcoin blockchain.

While the exact link between Sassaman and Bitcoin remains ambiguous, several X posts from over a decade ago show him criticizing the cryptocurrency for its insufficient privacy features and lack of fraud reversal protections.

In 2021, Meredith Patterson, Sassaman’s widow, stated, “To the best of my knowledge, Len was not Satoshi.”

Currently, Bitcoin is trading at $61,815, reflecting a 1.5% increase in the last 24 hours, though it remains 16% below its all-time high of $73,738 reached on March 14, according to CoinGecko data.
