The well-known statue representing Bitcoin’s elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, has been found after it was reported missing over the weekend. The art collective behind the installation, Satoshigallery, confirmed its recovery.
The statue was removed from its pedestal in Parco Ciani, a scenic lakeside park in Lugano, Switzerland, and later discovered in Lake Lugano by city workers. When recovered, the sculpture was found in multiple broken pieces, suggesting the motive was vandalism rather than theft for profit.
Interestingly, the statue had only been affixed to its base at two points near its feet, which remained attached when the rest of the figure was removed.
Satoshigallery had offered a 0.1 BTC bounty—worth over $11,000—for any information leading to its recovery.
Created by Italian artist and Bitcoin supporter Valentina Picozzi, the statue was unveiled in October 2024 after nearly two years of development. It has since become a symbolic landmark for the global Bitcoin community.
Bitcoin Community Reacts to the Incident
The crypto community expressed frustration and sadness over the act. Many saw the statue as more than art—a tribute to the values and mystery of Bitcoin’s origins.
“This was pointless and disrespectful. I hope those behind it are caught,” wrote Pointsville founder Gabor Gurbacs on X.
Others speculated the damage may have been caused by intoxicated individuals celebrating Swiss National Day, which took place the same weekend.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino acknowledged the statue’s recovery with a simple heart emoji online.
“You can take our statue, but not the spirit it represents,” Satoshigallery declared, reaffirming their mission to install 21 similar monuments across the globe in homage to Nakamoto.
