U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the President’s Working Group on Digital Assets to include Solana (SOL), XRP, and Cardano (ADA) in the country’s strategic crypto reserve.
In a follow-up statement, Trump confirmed that Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) would also be part of the reserve, emphasizing that they would form its foundation.
During his keynote speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, Trump had previously pledged to establish a “strategic national Bitcoin stockpile,” declaring:
“If I return to office, my administration will ensure that the United States retains 100% of all Bitcoin currently held or acquired in the future. We are keeping it all.”
He added that this move would effectively serve as the core of the U.S. Bitcoin stockpile.
However, the language around this initiative evolved after Trump’s January 23 executive order, which instructed officials to create a broader “digital asset stockpile” rather than focusing exclusively on Bitcoin. This shift frustrated Bitcoin maximalists.
Executive Order Sparks Debate Among Bitcoin Advocates
Trump’s executive order tasked the Working Group on Digital Assets with assessing the viability of a national crypto reserve and developing a regulatory framework for stablecoins. Additionally, it prohibited any research or development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in the U.S.
Despite the move, some Bitcoin advocates were displeased, arguing that the administration should have committed solely to Bitcoin.
“Who else thinks Trump’s digital asset stockpile should be Bitcoin-only?” asked Walker, host of THE Bitcoin podcast, on X.
Pierre Rochard, VP of research at Riot Platforms, also criticized the executive order for not aligning with Trump’s previous pro-Bitcoin rhetoric.
Looking ahead, President Trump is set to host the first White House Crypto Summit on March 7, where he will meet with industry leaders and the Digital Asset Working Group to discuss the future of crypto regulations in the U.S.
