BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management firm, is gearing up to introduce a Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) in Europe, as reported by Bloomberg on February 5.
This development follows the massive success of BlackRock’s U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which has accumulated over $57 billion in net assets since its launch in January 2024. IBIT has quickly risen to become the leading spot Bitcoin ETF in the United States.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, BlackRock’s upcoming European Bitcoin ETP will be based in Switzerland. The firm is expected to begin marketing the new fund as early as this month.
As one of the top issuers of ETFs globally, BlackRock oversees an impressive $4.4 trillion in assets under management (AUM) through its various ETP offerings. This European Bitcoin ETP would mark the company’s first venture into the Bitcoin ETP market outside North America.
Expanding Cryptocurrency Investment Offerings
Building on the success of IBIT, BlackRock has been actively expanding its cryptocurrency-related products internationally. In January, the firm introduced a new Bitcoin ETF in Canada through the Cboe Canada exchange, granting Canadian investors access to its U.S. spot Bitcoin fund.
The broader U.S. Bitcoin ETF market experienced substantial growth in 2024, recording over $35 billion in cumulative net inflows—equivalent to approximately $144 million in daily net investments, according to Farside Investors.
Furthermore, in November, total net assets in U.S. Bitcoin ETFs surpassed the $100 billion mark for the first time, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Analysts at Steno Research anticipate an additional $48 billion in net inflows into Bitcoin ETFs throughout 2025.
Bitcoin is increasingly being integrated into investment portfolios as a hedge against inflation and geopolitical risks, according to a December report from JPMorgan. The report highlighted the substantial capital inflows into the crypto market as a sign of Bitcoin’s growing role in institutional finance.
With the surge in institutional demand, Bitcoin’s price could experience significant upward momentum in 2025, as projected by asset management firm Sygnum Bank in a December forecast.
