Pump.fun, a decentralized platform designed for creating Solana-based memecoins, has come under intense scrutiny following reports that users have been streaming harmful and violent behavior. The platform’s livestream feature has sparked concerns within the crypto community, with many calling for stronger moderation or even a complete shutdown of the feature due to its increasingly troubling content.
Pump.fun livestreams getting “out of control”
On November 25, Beau, the safety manager for the Pudgy Penguins project, flagged a user during a livestream on Pump.fun who was making disturbing threats. The individual claimed they would commit suicide if their coin didn’t reach a certain market cap. Beau called on Pump.fun to intervene, disable the livestream, and offer help to the user. Beau also suggested that the platform consider disabling the livestream feature entirely, stating that it was already “out of control.”
Further reports have added to the growing concerns. One user reported seeing a person firing a gun out of a window every time their coin’s value rose. Other disturbing cases included threats made by a child claiming they would harm family members if their token didn’t reach a specific price, and a chilling remark from someone who threatened to commit an act of violence at a school if their memecoin didn’t perform well.
The livestream feature has garnered harsh criticism, with some users calling it a “pipeline of felonies.” One individual called for Pump.fun to deactivate the livestream function until stronger moderation tools could be implemented, pointing out that “turning on a camera to showcase your own depravity to the world isn’t noble or novel.”
Pump.fun team “moderates” illicit content
In response to these concerns, Alon, the pseudonymous leader of Pump.fun, acknowledged the criticism but defended the platform’s moderation practices. He assured the community that the team actively moderates all content, including images, videos, livestreams, and comments on the platform.
“We have a large team of moderators working around the clock, as well as an internal engineering team focused on helping us scale to meet the growing demand of coins, streams, and comments,” Alon explained. He emphasized that moderation has been a top priority since the platform’s launch and reassured users that the team is dedicated to addressing illicit content.
Despite these assurances, many in the community are calling for more transparency and immediate action to prevent further harmful broadcasts. As of now, Pump.fun has not clarified whether it will introduce new safeguards or make changes to the livestream feature.
