In Lugano, Switzerland, a new statue honoring Bitcoin’s founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, was revealed recently. Taking 18 months of research and three months of building, artist Valentina Picozzi says it was designed to connect people to Bitcoin culture through art.
The statue features a faceless figure on a laptop that appears differently based on the viewer’s angle. Seen from the side, it’s clear, but from the front or back, it creates a “see-through” effect due to its unique slit design. “The statue disappears,” Picozzi said, symbolizing Satoshi’s mystery and leaving “Satoshi” visible only “through the lines of code.
An artist and orthodontist from Italy, Picozzi discovered Bitcoin in 2012 and has been actively creating art around the cryptocurrency since. She crafted the statue using stainless steel and corten blocks and placed it outside Villa Ciani, a historic mansion in Lugano. It was unveiled at Plan B’s annual forum, an event that brings blockchain and Bitcoin supporters together.
Lugano’s mayor, Michele Foletti, expressed pride, saying the statue reflects the city’s vision as a digital innovation center. “Lugano has become a Bitcoin city,” he noted, emphasizing the city’s commitment to blockchain tech.
The statue will not remain permanently in front of Villa Ciani, but will stay in Lugano’s Parco Ciani. Picozzi mentioned a final spot for the statue will be chosen soon and shared with the community.
Another Satoshi Nakamoto in Hungary
This isn’t the only tribute to the anonymous Bitcoin creator; in 2021, Budapest installed its own statue of Satoshi at Graphisoft Park. Sculptors Gergely Réka and Tamás Gilly created the bronze figure with a mirrored face, allowing visitors to see themselves, a nod to the idea that anyone could be Satoshi.
