Elon Musk discusses DOGE cabinet position, economics at Trump rally

Elon Musk advocated for significant changes in U.S. governance during a speech on Oct. 17 at an event supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Held in a high school auditorium near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the town hall marked Musk’s first major public speaking event since aligning with Trump’s campaign. He highlighted Trump as the best economic choice for voters.

During the speech, Musk tackled issues like the U.S. national deficit, voter fraud claims, immigration, and freedom of speech. Though he addressed questions about leading a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under a potential Trump administration, Musk refrained from committing fully to the role. When an audience member mentioned the department, Musk briefly acknowledged it with a casual “Yeah, DOGE,” but redirected the conversation to criticize the government’s “wasteful” spending. He described the current administration’s financial practices as a “misuse of taxpayer funds.”

Trump first floated the idea of Musk serving as an adviser back in August. That same day, Musk posted an image depicting himself as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, captioning it with, “I am willing to serve.”

While many see Musk’s post as a signal of his willingness to join Trump’s administration, others believe his ongoing political efforts—like his Super PAC America PAC—are already a form of service. The PAC aims to register 800,000 new voters in key states and has received over $75 million in donations from Musk.

For now, there’s no concrete sign that Musk will leave his tech ventures for a full-time political role. With his leadership across multiple companies, such a move could have significant financial repercussions for many stakeholders.
