Crypto community Respond to X’s Suspension in Brazil

On August 30, voices from the cryptocurrency community vented their displeasure on social media following a decision by a Brazilian Supreme Court justice to halt the operations of X in the country.

“Totally insane of Brazil to block X. Seems like the US is on a similar path with their moves against TikTok,” remarked Scott Melker, popularly known as “The Wolf of All Streets,” sharing his thoughts with his 959,300 followers on the platform.

Crypto enthusiast “MrMoontastic.eth” commented on the impact of this decision, saying, “Brazil will miss out on the upcoming bullrun. It’s disappointing.”

A prominent crypto analyst pointed out the significance of decentralized digital currencies like Bitcoin in light of these events.

“At a time like this, wouldn’t a decentralized, uncensorable, scarce, digital, global monetary asset be beneficial?” posited James Check, the lead analyst at Glassnode.

“Does anyone know if such a thing is being developed?” added Check.

Tech attorney Preston Byrne suggested that the repercussions of Brazil’s actions against X could set a precedent for other nations.

“If Brazil manages to overcome X, expect the EU, UK, Australia, Canada to enact similar bans,” Byrne posted on X.

He further noted, “If X prevails over Brazil, it will demonstrate that censorship efforts are ineffective against Americans, potentially causing such regimes globally to weaken quickly.”

Musk given firm deadline

The suspension followed an ultimatum given to Elon Musk regarding the appointment of a legal representative for the platform.

On the same day, Cointelegraph reported that Justice Alexandre de Moraes made good on his threat to shut down X’s operations in Brazil if Musk did not designate a legal representative by August 29. According to X’s Global Government Affairs team, the platform “would not adhere to Moraes’ unjust directives to censor his political adversaries.”

Previously, Moraes had been probing X for allegedly facilitating and promoting misinformation tied to the former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The shutdown occurred nearly two weeks after X reported threats from Moraes towards its legal representative in Brazil, leading the social media company to declare on August 17 that it would cease its operations in Brazil, although the service would continue to be available to Brazilian users.
