Solo Miner Strikes $200K Bitcoin Jackpot with Mere 0.012% Hashrate

In a remarkable stroke of luck, a lone Bitcoin miner recently secured a significant windfall by validating a Bitcoin block, earning just shy of $200,000.

This miner successfully validated block number 858,978 at 4:21 pm UTC, as per details from the Bitcoin block explorer Mempool.space. This block included 2,391 transactions, earning the miner a reward of 3.27 Bitcoin, valued at $199,094 at the time of receipt.

The miner in question was operating under Solo CK Pool, a unique solo mining pool that functions differently from typical mining pools.

Data from Mempool.space reveals that at the time the block was mined, the Solo CK miner was operating with 456 petahashes of hashrate.

Currently, the network’s average hashrate stands at about 665 exahashes per second (EH/s), which places this miner’s capacity at approximately 0.012% of the total network hashrate.

On July 23, the network hashrate peaked at an all-time high of 754 EH/s, according to data from BitInfoCharts.

Despite its designation as a “pool,” SoloCK operates by aggregating the hashrate of several smaller miners, yet it only awards the mining reward to the individual miner who actually solves the block.

Over the past year, this miner has successfully mined 14 Bitcoin blocks, amassing a total of 59.3 Bitcoin, which is currently worth around $3.5 million.

The dominance of major mining corporations like Riot Blockchain and Marathon Digital, which wield substantial hashrate, makes it exceptionally uncommon for solo miners to successfully validate a block.

The rarity of such an event is underscored by the fact that solo miners have only validated roughly 290 out of the 859,000 blocks since Bitcoin began 14 years ago.

In March 2023 highlighted a similar event where a solo miner earned the full 6.25 BTC reward for mining a block, though the value of Bitcoin at the time made the reward approximately $150,000.

The most recent instance of a solo-mined block occurred on July 25, when a miner successfully solved block 853,742, securing a reward valued around $210,000.
