77,000 Customers Affected in Data Breach, Says Crypto ETF Issuer Fidelity

Fidelity Investments, a major player in crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), has revealed a data breach that compromised the personal details of over 77,000 customers.

On October 9, the company informed the attorney general of Maine that 77,099 customers had been affected by this breach, which is a small portion of its broader 51.5 million customer base.

The breach occurred between August 17 and 19, during which time hackers accessed customer names and other personal information through two newly created accounts. Fidelity detected the unauthorized activity and cut off access on August 19.

The $5 trillion asset management firm enlisted external cybersecurity experts to help resolve the situation and stressed that no customer accounts were directly impacted.

Fidelity is offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services to those affected, advising customers to keep an eye on any unusual financial activity. Impacted individuals will need to sign up for these services via TransUnion Interactive.

Fidelity also reminded customers to stay vigilant and regularly review their financial statements for signs of fraud or identity theft.

This marks the fourth data breach Fidelity has experienced in the past year, with previous incidents reported in March and July.

Fidelity, which has rolled out spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs in the U.S. this year, did not immediately respond to requests for further comment. Its Bitcoin fund, the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), has attracted close to $10 billion in flows since launching in January, while its Ethereum fund (FETH) has garnered $445 million in flows since July.

Fidelity isn’t the only company to experience such breaches recently; OpenAI, as well as AT&T, have also faced significant data breaches this year, with AT&T’s incident affecting more than 100 million customers.
