Temporary Removal: MetaMask Pulled from Apple’s App Store Briefly

On October 14, MetaMask, the popular Ethereum wallet, experienced a temporary outage on Apple’s App Store, leaving users concerned about its sudden disappearance. With a user base of over 30 million worldwide, MetaMask is an essential tool for accessing various Web3 decentralized applications (DApps).

Reports began circulating on October 14, indicating that the MetaMask app was no longer available for download on the App Store. Users attempting to download the application from MetaMask’s official website also faced restrictions. A MetaMask spokesperson swiftly addressed the situation, assuring users that the issue did not stem from any security breach or malicious activity.

According to MetaMask, the problem was related to Apple’s service policies, particularly those prohibiting apps from running unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining. Although the removal was temporary, MetaMask emphasized that users need not worry about their security, and no action on their part was necessary.

The incident highlights a recurring challenge faced by MetaMask and other cryptocurrency-related apps in dealing with tech giants. This is not the first time MetaMask has encountered such issues. In December 2019, the app was suspended from Google Play’s app store for allegedly violating financial services guidelines, specifically regarding cryptocurrency mining on mobile devices. Despite MetaMask’s attempts to appeal the ban, Google upheld its decision.

Furthermore, Apple’s stringent guidelines, which include a requirement for developers to share 30% of transaction revenues, pose additional challenges for crypto firms. This policy has been a significant barrier, especially for those wanting iOS users to engage in activities like purchasing nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

MetaMask remains a vital player in the crypto space, providing millions of users with access to the world of decentralized finance. As the clash between cryptocurrency apps and major platforms continues, finding common ground becomes essential to fostering innovation while adhering to platform regulations.
