Pro-Crypto Patrick McHenry Temporarily Holds House Speaker Position

In an unprecedented turn of events, U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry, a staunch advocate for the cryptocurrency industry, has assumed the role of interim House Speaker following the removal of U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. This historic decision unfolded after a narrow 216–210 vote by Congress, with eight votes against McCarthy originating from fellow Republicans, making it the first instance in U.S. history where a House Speaker has been ousted, as reported by Reuters.

The motion to remove McCarthy was instigated by his political rival, Matt Gaetz, who raised concerns about McCarthy’s conflicting commitments. Although McHenry’s appointment is temporary, it holds significant implications, especially for the digital asset sector. As the Speaker, McHenry will influence the House’s legislative priorities, oversee committee assignments, and schedule debates and votes on specific bills, making this role one of the most powerful in the U.S. government, following the president and vice president.

McHenry’s ascendancy is particularly notable for the cryptocurrency community, given his opposition to the Securities Exchange Commission’s enforcement-oriented approach to regulating the crypto industry. He recently challenged SEC Chair Gary Gensler during his congressional testimony, accusing Gensler of attempting to stifle the digital asset ecosystem. McHenry also criticized Gensler for lack of transparency regarding the SEC’s connections with FTX and its former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried.

Furthermore, McHenry released a draft proposal titled “Digital Asset Market Structure Proposal” on June 1, aiming to enhance regulatory clarity, fill gaps in the existing framework, and encourage innovation within the cryptocurrency space. This initiative received praise from various industry leaders.

However, McHenry’s tenure as House Speaker might be short-lived, as an official vote for a new House Speaker is scheduled for October 11, according to Bloomberg reports. Speculation is rife about potential replacements, including pro-crypto Representative Tom Emmer and even former President Donald Trump. Yet, none of these candidates have publicly expressed interest in assuming the position. Meanwhile, McCarthy has confirmed he will not seek re-election for the role of House Speaker. The unfolding political landscape promises intriguing developments, especially for the cryptocurrency industry, as new leadership takes the reins in the U.S. House of Representatives.
