Meta’s Ambitious Move: Report Reveals Plans to Launch Commercial AI Tools as Competition for Google and OpenAI

According to a report from the Financial Times, Meta has plans to introduce a commercial version of its artificial intelligence (AI) model, aiming to expand its usage and compete with industry leaders like Google and OpenAI.

While Meta had previously released its large language model (LLM) called LLaMa for researchers and academics earlier this year, the upcoming commercial version is expected to have broader availability and offer customization options for companies.

Sources familiar with Meta’s high-level strategy revealed that the company’s goal is to diminish the current dominance of OpenAI in the AI market. The commercial version of LLaMa will enable startups and businesses to develop custom software and applications using Meta’s underlying AI technology.

Currently, all of Meta’s models are free and open-source. However, the report suggests that Meta has explored the possibility of a paid version for enterprise customers, although it would not be part of the upcoming release.

In contrast to competitors like OpenAI, Meta has made its LLM models open-source, allowing public access to the system’s operations and details. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Meta to position itself positively within the AI ecosystem, portraying itself as a company that is charitable and supportive of the community.

CryptoGrafos reached out to Meta for further comments on these developments.

These plans come at a time when Meta is facing a lawsuit from author Sarah Silverman and other authors, who allege that the company committed copyright infringement during the training of its AI systems. OpenAI is also dealing with a similar class-action lawsuit, which accuses the company of data theft in the training of its models.
