Introducing the National AI Commission Act: Advancing AI Governance in the United States

US Legislators Propose National AI Commission Act to Address AI Regulation and Public Engagement

A group of bipartisan lawmakers in the United States has put forward a bill aimed at establishing a commission to study and regulate artificial intelligence (AI) in the country. The move follows growing concerns about the need for effective AI governance, highlighted by recent calls from consumer protection groups in the European Union (EU) to investigate popular chatbot AI models.

The National AI Commission Act, introduced by Representatives Ted Lieu, Ken Buck, and Anna Eshoo, seeks to create a national body tasked with developing a comprehensive framework for AI regulation. The primary objective of the bill is to mitigate potential risks associated with unregulated AI, as emphasized by Ted Lieu. By bringing together a diverse range of experts, government officials, industry representatives, and labor stakeholders, the commission aims to generate recommendations for sound AI regulation.

Support for the National AI Commission Act has come from Merve Hickok, president of the Center for AI and Digital Policy. Hickok asserts that the proposal is not only timely but also crucial in establishing necessary regulations for AI and involving the public in shaping the nation’s AI strategy. Previously, the Center for AI and Digital Policy has raised concerns about the US’s level of preparedness in addressing future AI challenges.

Prominent figures in the tech industry, including billionaire Elon Musk, have been advocating for the implementation of measures to control the rapid advancement of AI. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has also voiced his concerns about the urgency of effective AI industry regulation.

The introduction of the National AI Commission Act reflects a proactive step by US lawmakers to address the complexities of AI governance. By promoting transparency, accountability, and public engagement, the commission aims to shape AI regulation that balances innovation with responsible practices, safeguarding against potential harm.
